Daniel Negreanu wants more rule changes, proposes a ban on face-covering

Article cover

WSOP Paradise in the sunny Bahamas has come to an end, and it was held with new rules that banned the use of mobile phones at the table. In addition, coaching was also banned.

Not to be outdone by the rules and bans, Daniel Negreanu posted his suggestions on social media, which he thinks should be implemented in the tournament rules.

Specifically, Daniel posted the following 4 points:

1. No face covering of any sort.

2. No Sunglasses.

3. If a player bets 90% or more of their stack, it is an all in.

4. No card protectors allowed on the table.

Daniel commented on the points, saying that he wanted to protect the game in this way and improve the experience for players and spectators alike.

Most agree with his suggestions

A debate was sparked under this post, and as is usually the case, people split into different groups. Names such as Brian Rast, Jason Koon and even Tom Dwan have given their opinions here.

The vast majority of the comments agree with Daniel's suggestions and would welcome these bans into the tournament rules. The biggest discussion revolved around point number 3, where commenters pointed out that it may slow down the game. This is because players will have to calculate the exact percentage of their bet and the dealer will have to do the same. Commentators also pointed out that this rule would only lead to players betting, for example, 89 percent of their stack to avoid an unwanted all-in.

Daniel suggested the rule change after seeing several hands during the WSOP Paradise where a player bet all but one chip. Another player subsequently went all-in and immediately showed his cards because he didn't notice his opponent's one remaining chip and thought they were both all-in. If the player with one chip saw that he was at a disadvantage, he could still have discarded his cards and could have made a better payjump by doing so. This is exactly what Daniel wants to prevent.

A number of commenters have asked why Daniel wants to ban card protectors. Daniel responded by saying that it was so that small cameras could not be installed on these protectors and so that people could not cheat in this way. If a player wants to protect his cards, he should use one of his chips to do so.

Negreanu is not the first with similar proposals

Daniel Negreanu is not the first pro to demand that tournament rules should prohibit, for example, face-covering. Earlier in the year, Phil Hellmuth, who doesn't like the respirator on Isaac Haxton's face, came up with such a suggestion. Isaac has worn a respirator on his face at every tournament since the covid days and has won many tournaments since then. However, you won't find him in the winning photo without the face covering anymore. Phil has therefore proposed a change to the tournament rules where there should be a clear ban on face coverings.

These new proposals for changes to tournament rules have sparked a great deal of discussion, and it is now the turn of the various poker series to implement some of these proposals into their rules. Will we see these changes in practice as early as next year during the WSOP in Las Vegas?
