I'm sure many of you who play the Spin and Go (SnG) format are familiar with this. You put in your buy-in and hope for the highest possible amount, ideally, of course, the million-dollar amount.
The story in this article happened back in June, but the game room has only now released more details and an interview with the winner. So let's move on to June 7 this year, specifically to the online gaming site Winamax, where a 27-year-old French tattoo artist from Nîmes by the name of Romain has registered. Prior to that, Romain visited his friend who was playing SnG right next to him and decided that if his friend lost, he would refund his buy-in. And the friend lost!
But Romain didn't have any money on him, so they agreed to send the money to his account at the aforementioned gambling hall. So the Frenchman created a new account with the name "Ara digne40" and deposited his first 50€.
From 25€ to 800.000€ in 6 minutes
The Frenchman first played a couple of €5 SnG tournaments, then a couple of €10 tournaments, and less than two hours after signing up, he decided to try one last €25 Expresso Nitro three-player tournament. There he suddenly found himself on a golden table with a prizepool of €1,000,000, where the winner was looking at a reward of up to €800,000, the runner-up received €120,000, and the third-place player had €80,000 up for grabs.
In his own words, he didn't believe himself that he was sitting at a table with a prizepool of €1,000,000 and had to check several times that he was indeed playing for real money and not Play Money. The whole game lasted only 6 minutes and exactly 9 hands. Romain took the lead on the fourth hand when he won with his K-J against an opponent with J-J on his hand. Romain didn't hit anything on the board, but still decided to go all-in after the turn, to which his opponent folded his cards.
The tater from France noticed that his opponents weren't rushing into crazy bets, so he decided to play aggressively. Thanks to this play, Romain eventually won the tournament and added €800,000 to his player account. However, at that time he had not yet verified his account, so he still couldn't transfer the money to his bank account, so he still didn't believe that he would actually get it. But the next day, the gaming company verified his account, he requested a withdrawal, and it landed in his bank account two days later.
"As soon as I saw the box telling me I had just won €800,000, everything changed. I was in an indescribable state, I wanted to cry, so many things were running through my head. When I calmed down, I decided to call my best friend and ask him to come give me a cigarette. I showed him the screenshot and I can say that even he didn't believe what he saw. I can tell you that I felt something I had never felt before. Just talking about it brings tears to my eyes. Thank you, thank you, thank you." said the happy winner.
How will his life change and what are his next poker plans?
"When I was growing up, I was very poor. But since I'm a pretty realistic person, I'm going to keep working. Especially since I'm lucky enough to be doing a job that I really enjoy. I'm a tattoo artist and I love doing it, so even if I don't make a fortune, I'm going to keep doing what I enjoy. The most important thing for me now is knowing that I can have my own house and a very different living situation. And maybe, who knows, Winamax will allow me to have a family life, something I've always denied myself due to lack of funds. I also want to invest in real estate. To buy an apartment, and maybe even start my own business so I can work with my friends."
"I don't have any particular goal in poker. I've always enjoyed the game, but at the moment I realise I'm not at the right level to play in the most expensive tournaments. Especially since I just started playing again. Since I have a lot of patience thanks to the work I do, I plan to gradually get back into tournaments. As for the Expressos, of course I intend to continue playing them. With what I experienced a few weeks ago and all the adrenaline this format gives, I won't stop! Thank you Winamax," Romain concluded.
