The name Men Nguyen certainly needs no introduction. But if there is someone among our readers who does not know this name, we will give you a short summary. Men is a 70-year-old Vietnamese-American professional who fled the communist regime in 1978 from Vietnam to the United States, where he was granted political asylum. He played poker for the first time in Las Vegas in 1984 and became a U.S. citizen in 1986. He won his first tournament in 1987.
In total, he has 7 WSOP bracelets, 4 WSOPC rings, over 90 wins, 4 Card Player Player of the Year titles, over 520 ITM placements, and lifetime winnings worth over $11 million. He has been known to donate his winnings to charities on numerous occasions and even built a kindergarten in Vietnam. He is dedicated to poker coaching, which is why he has been nicknamed "The Master" by his students. His students included his wife Van, who won the WPT Celebrity Invitational in 2008, becoming the first woman to win a WPT Mixed event.
In addition to his charity work and coaching, however, he has often found himself in various controversial situations, having been accused of cheating or stealing chips. However, nothing has ever been proven against him and he has always denied all accusations. Even during the recently concluded WSOP, he was involved in a hand in which a player had his chips stolen.
Robbed by his own nephew
"The Master" has spent the past three months playing poker in the US, primarily at the WSOP series in Las Vegas and later in California. When Men left for the US, he left his house in charge of his sister and her sons. Before leaving, he locked up his bedroom and left for the US. When he returned to Vietnam on August 20, he found his bedroom unlocked and his safe missing VND200 million, $8,000 in cash, three Rolex watches and various other jewellery. In total, $60,300 worth of valuables were stolen from him.
His 41-year-old nephew, Dinh Chi Vu, was immediately suspected of the burglary and theft and eventually confessed to the crime. Vu told police that he bought tools to pick the locks, found the key to the safe in the room, opened the safe and stole its contents. He subsequently confessed to selling the jewelry and luxury watches, exchanging the U.S. dollars, and keeping the remaining cash. Fortunately, he was unable to sell all the valuables and so the police managed to salvage some. What punishment awaits the thief, the police did not disclose.
