Murder, cut fingers, kidnapping or drug dealing - what people will do for gambling debts

Article cover

Our article today was prompted by several headlines from various parts of the world that were so absurd we couldn't deprive you of them. In each of these stories, the main issue was gambling debts.

Selling drugs for debt

To begin with, we'll start with something that's not entirely unusual or unexpected. A 43-year-old man from Dublin was searched and police found drugs (allegedly marijuana) worth €474,000. In addition to the drugs, police also found €6,370 in cash, various accessories, bags and scales. The man confessed to both possession and sale of drugs and gave gambling debts of €100,000 as the reason for this illegal activity. In addition, he further claimed that he had a back injury that prevented him from working. He was originally due to serve 6 years, but the judge accepted his debts, incapacity for work and lack of previous convictions as mitigating factors, which resulted in him receiving a sentence of 4½ years behind bars.

The actual kidnapping

From Dublin, Ireland, we move to Nigeria, where a 41-year-old man is alleged to have staged his own kidnapping, again prompted to do so by gambling debts. Do you know what the amount was? 1 million Nigerian naira, which translates to about €564. The man in question was said to have enjoyed previous successes where he won a larger sum of money, which led him to buy a Toyota Corrola. However, his luck subsequently ran out and the game went down the drain.

The man allegedly phoned his wife one day and claimed he had been kidnapped. He claimed that the kidnappers were demanding a ransom of 5 million naira, which translates to ₦2,822 from her. The wife subsequently contacted the local police and they launched an investigation which led them to her husband. The police suspected that the man had attempted suicide by inhaling insecticides, so they rushed him to hospital. The police said that as soon as his health permits, legal action will be taken with the man.

Absurd murder

And there we have the so-called icing on the cake. From Nigeria, we now move to Thailand, where online gambling debts have led to murder. 57-year-old Kamonwan Wolf has confessed to the murder of her 65-year-old friend Wanna Kürner. Wanna was a wealthy woman and the mother-in-law of a prosecutor.

The whole situation happened on November 15 this year, when Kamonwan took an iron bar and hit her friend several times in the forehead. She then stole her gold necklace, bracelet and chopped off her fingers to take her diamond rings. She then sold the jewellery in the market for 80,000 baht, which translates to about €2,196.

The woman in question initially denied involvement in the murder, but was convicted by DNA tests on hair on the victim's fingernails. It was initially believed that her German husband was also involved in the murder. However, after checking his alibi, the police ruled out his involvement. The victim's brother said he did not understand how anyone could be so cruel to his sister and that if Kamonwan had asked his sister for money, she would certainly have helped her. She now faces the death penalty, life imprisonment or 20 years behind bars for premeditated murder.
