The High Stakes Duel brought us a duel between Patrik Antonius and Jared Bleznick for its fifth edition. The organizers brought one change to the game, and that was that the game was played in both NLH and PLO formats, alternating every 10 hands.
Jared Bleznick won the first round with a buy-in of $50,000 and Antonius immediately called for a rematch. This followed a week later when the buy-in was already $100,000. Jared Bleznick won this duel as well, and Patrik again demanded a rematch.
The rematch took place last night and the buy-in was now worth $200,000. The players started with blinds of $300/$600 and we witnessed up to 5 hours of duel. Right from the start, WSOP Hall of Fame member Patrik Antonius took the lead.
After that, however, the stacks were more or less even, and we saw this play out for the next 3 hours. It was only after three hours of play that the situation changed, with Patrik in the lead once and Jared another time. Gradually, however, Jared Bleznick took a significant lead, robbing Antonius of his chips.
The entire hand ended in the blinds at $4,000/$8,000 when Bleznick hit a straight to beat Patrik Antonius for the third time. After this loss, Antonius decided to call it quits and there would be no rematch. Jared Bleznick thus became the winner of HSD 5, for which he earned a total of $350,000, and is only the second player in High Stakes Duel history to defeat his opponent three times in a row. Before him, only Phil Hellmuth had done so, defeating first Antonio Esfandiari in HSD 1 and then Daniel Negreanu in HSD 2.
