For those who don't know the name Gus Hansen, or his nickname The Great Dane, let's start with a little bit about his career. Gus is a 50-year-old poker player from Denmark who used to play tennis and backgammon before his poker career. However, there were few opportunities in backgammon, so he switched to poker while studying in California. He is also the author of several books.
Gus Hansen's achievements
Looking at his hendonmob, anyone will be impressed by his first three tournament results, back in 2002 and 2003. These are the first places and they are worth more than 1.2 million dollars. And they're not just any wins either, but straight WPT titles.
Gus has a lot of achievements to his credit, so it's only right to mention a few in this article. In 2004 he won a PCA tournament for $455,780, a year later he won the Superstars Invitational for $1,000,000, in 2007 he won Poker After Dark Season I for $120,000 and just a month after that he won the Aussie Millions Main Event for $1,192,919. He also has a WSOPE 2010 bracelet to his credit, when he won the £10,350 NLH High Roller Heads-Up for £288,409.
Gus was known for his aggressive play, where he had no problem going hard into the hand with any combination. He has won over $10.2 million in his live tournament career. But he also became well known for losing more than $20 million on FullTilt between 2007 and 2014.
Gus' comeback
Since 2014, Gus has only one entry on Hendonmob and that was from the 2019 WSOP Main Event when he finished 689th. Although he hasn't been seen in tournaments for 10 years, with the exception of the aforementioned WSOP 2019, Gus has been a regular in high stakes cash games.
Gus retired from tournament poker, moved back to Denmark from Monaco, and started to focus on his family. But now things have changed, and Gus Hansen has announced a big comeback on his Instagram. We'll see him playing soon during the EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final. A new addition to his resume is the signing of a partnership with Winamax, which will see him team up with the likes of Adrian Mateos, Davidi Kitai and Mustapha Kanit.
With the return of the Great Dane to tournament poker, we can look forward to great poker and of course a lot of new interesting situations. We wish Gus much new success and happiness in his new team, and we'll finish by reminiscing together about his legendary hand from High Stakes Poker.
