The American media has been filled in recent days with a very curious report published by the local police. Let us go back to the 10th of February this year, more precisely to the early morning hours of this day, and to the city of Chicago in the US state of Illinois. On this day, a married couple of 70-year-old pensioners visited the local Rivers Casino Des Plaines, from where they took home a prize of $130,000.
The winnings were claimed by robbers
After the winnings, the couple still gambled in the casino, during which time they were approached by a strange woman who was very friendly to them. However, security camera footage revealed that the woman later spoke to two men, identified allegedly as Marcell Britton (27) and Aramie Kent (34).
Marcell and Aramie were seen to have won a substantial sum of money at the casino, and the cameras caught one of the pensioners pointing at the couple, laughing and kneading their hands.
The pensioners and their winnings were escorted to their car by casino security at around 6:00am. As soon as they got in the car, the alleged perpetrators, Marcell and Aramie, left the casino and got into their bronze Genesis SUV and followed the retired couple to their home.
As the couple walked to the front door of their home, the aforementioned pair ran up to them and attempted to steal their winnings. One of the offenders pointed a gun at the man's face and pushed him to the ground. He snatched the paper bag from the wife's hands and the two robbers quickly ran away.
Unpleasant surprise
Now comes the funniest part of the whole robbery. Just before the robbers ambushed them, the wife put the $130,000 winnings in her walker. In the paper bag that the robbers stole from her, the couple had only the uneaten pieces of steak and lobster that they had left packed from their dinner at the casino.
And because the thieves didn't look in the bag and check its contents, they only took the uneaten lobster and a piece of steak. The couple, realizing that the robbers had not stolen the money, quickly fled to their house, expecting the robbers to return. However, the entire incident was witnessed by their neighbor, who immediately ran to their aid. Fortunately, the perpetrators did not return and no one was injured.
The perpetrators were easily identified
The robbers were very easily identified by the police, thanks to the fact that they presented their ID cards when entering the casino. Subsequently, they had already been caught on cameras in the casino, and their stalking of the couple was captured on city cameras and automated cameras recognizing car license plates.
Arrest warrants were issued for both robbers on August 19, and Marcell Britton was arrested on August 28. The second suspect, Aramie Kent, is still at large and police are searching for him. Both are charged with armed robbery, aggravated robbery and robbery of a victim over 60. Their perpetrator, a woman who spoke to the robbed couple in the casino, has also been identified. However, charges against her have not been announced. In the state of Illinois, armed robbery with a firearm is taken very seriously and as such, offenders face a minimum of 6 years and a maximum of 45 years in prison.
Lawyers say police don't have the right guy
Lawyers representing Marcell Britton, however, say their client does not match the suspects' descriptions and that he has a substantial amount of money that he received as a result of a recent court settlement.
The judge granted a motion by prosecutors to detain Britton until his trial, which is scheduled for Oct. 3. The judge deemed the man dangerous, and ordered detention without the possibility of release. If you're wondering why the perpetrator was only caught now, when the deed happened back in February, the answer might be provided by a local police officer, who said that the investigation into the case was lengthy, but because of that, they made sure they had all the facts.
What do you say, getting 6 to 45 years in prison for stealing the remains of an uneaten lobster and steak was certainly worth it, wasn't it?
