The $10,000 buy-in WSOP Las Vegas Main Event is the talk of the poker community right now, and everyone is wondering if it will break last year's record of 10,043 entries.

Before we dive into fligh 1D, let's take a moment to stop by fligh 1C and introduce the other qualifiers, as at the time of writing yesterday's article, not all the names had been released yet.

The last flight brought more than 5.000 entries

Maria Konnikova opened the last 1D flight, from which the advancing players will meet on Day 2D, with her shuffle up and deal, and brought as many as 5,014 entries. This brings the field to over 9,280 entries, making the WSOP 2024 Main Event already the second largest in history. The advancing players include 3.823 players and among them are names like Brian Hastings, Anson Tsang, Davidi Kitai, Martin Jacobson, Jack Sinclair, Alexandros Kolonias, Daniel Weinman, Joe Cada, Ari Engel, Espen Jorstad, Stanislav Zegal, Brian Rast, Stephen Chidwick, David Peters, Kristen Foxen, Scotty Nguyen, Dietrich Fast, Alex Foxen, Ryan Riess, Maria Konnikova, Phil Laak, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Tony Dunst, Men Nguyen, Benny Glaser, Will Kassouf and the legendary Phil Ivey.

Late registration will also be open for the first two levels in night 2ABC and tomorrow's 2D, so we won't know the final numbers until after those days.

Terminal Cancer Player

Playing the WSOP Main Event is a dream for many players, and it was on the bucket list of Matt Snook, a former contestant on American Idol's "The Voice" who was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer in January. Matt has sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma, which is a rare aggressive form of kidney cancer that can also affect other parts of the body. It starts in the kidneys and goes all the way to the bones. Doctors give him 6 months to a year to live, so this may be Snook's last tournament.
